Aevig THOR – Dress watch Review

We delve into Aevig Thor dress watch to see what it’s got to offer. I first stumbled upon Aevig brand on social media when they came up with the Corvid field watch, this caught my attention with a deep desire to review the brand. We finally had this opportunity with the release of the THOR dress watch.

Aevig is based in the Netherland, founded by Chip Yuen in 2013 after successfully designing two watch projects for the popular online watch community – Watchuseek.

You might have wondered where is the name ‘AEVIG’ comes from? The name is an ancient Norse word meaning ‘eternal’/continues to strive for perfection. A true fitting name as the brand Aevig is inspired by retro/vintage watches, this can be seen from the range of quality wristwatches produced at a very affordable price point by this brand.

Very impressed with the packaging of the Thor, first you get a thick brown cardboard box with the brand name printed boldly with information about the brand written all over the box. Opening the, you’re greeted by a galvanised box that houses the watch.

The Thor is wrapped in a watch roll with an extra perlon strap and a spring bar tool should in case you decide to switch strap depending on your taste and mood. For this review, Chip was kind enough to send us the grey Teju lizard strap, sold separately for  79 euro. Only available for EU customers due to CITES export laws.

Manufacturers specification:

  • Material: 316L stainless steel
  • Dimensions: 40mm width x 48mm length
  • Lug width: 20mm
  • Thickness: 11mm, 12,5mm including box sapphire
  • Movement: Miyota 8N33 manual wind
  • Water Resistant: 50m
  • Crystal: double domed box sapphire with AR on inside
  • Lume: Swiss Luminova

The Thor is powered by a Miyota 8N33 manual wind movement and features a manual wind hence the 50 meters water resistance. According to Aevig website, “Hand winding a watch satisfies the connection to the marvel a mechanical watch is”. it would have been nice to see an automatic wind but since the brand is going for the vintage style, this could have been deliberate.

None the less, it’s a reliable movement that will not fail you. A strong ticking second hand which hits the second markers right on the dot each and every time.

The case is made from a polished 316L stainless steel and has a nice hefty feel to it, measuring at 40mm width x 48mm length, with a lug width of 20mm, a classic dimension of a true gentleman’s watch. the back features a see-through case back showing off the detailed Miyota 8N33 manual wind movement.

The Thor dress watch comes in three colour options “silver grey, a sunburst blue, or cool black dial”. A clean and uncluttered dial, nothing too much going on with the dial as you would expect with a dress watch but one thing very striking and much admired is how the dial colour dances when placed against the light as you can see from the photos. out of the 3 option, I’m swayed towards the blue dial.

Lots of attention and details to the solid finish calf leather strap of the Thor measuring 80 x 115mm. Perforated at the back for added ventilation and comfort, nice comfortable strap for this winter season. The polished buckle is engraved with the Aevig logo, also nicely finished.

The Thor is a true gentleman’s timepiece. Boasting vintage style, you can’t go wrong with this dress watch. Well sized and sophisticated looking with lots to offer, this watch has it all.

Should l mention, it’s also affordable. I’m very enthusiastic about Aevig brand and their watches, also am l looking forward to their next project. The Thor is priced at €579, you can get the Thor from
