I’ve always been fascinated by products that carry the tag ‘Made in Germany’, simply for their quality, innovation, and longevity associated with such products as some of you can testify to. Among many watchmakers in Germany is Stowa that has kept a steady pace when it comes to the 3 qualities mentioned earlier. I was dying to review their line of watches. We finally had that opportunity with the Stowa Marine Classic 40 Automatic watch.
To start off, let’s check some features of the watch
- REF – Marine Classic Automatic
- MOVEMENT – Swiss made ETA 2824-2

- CASE DIAMETER – 40mm
- SPECIFIC FEATURES – Specific features: screwed case back, date, temperature-blued steel hands

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I got exceeded my expectations. The watch comes presented in an aluminium box wrapped in an outer white cardboard box. The interior of the box is divided into two containments, a smaller one for the watch and the second one for the warranty papers.
The Case and Dial
Nothing overbearing about the case sized at 40mm. Very nicely finished and polished case, given the marine classic a dressy look. The Stowa Marine is furnished with a slightly domed sapphire crystal treated with AR coating, both on top and on the back display.
The dial is where this piece shines. The dial features the Arabic numeral printed, very legible and sharp with the date window nicely tucked at 6 o’ clock, unconstructive to the overall simple look of the dial face.
All hands of the Stowa Marine classic are made out of blued steel, through a heating process described as a “thermic process”. At a glance the hands look black but placed against the light, blue shows up, which makes you feel like you’re wearing a slightly different watch with the look of the hands, adding to the stylish look of the watch.
The case houses the ETA 2824, a standard work-horse. The movement is beautifully decorated and displayed in a see-through sapphire glass case back as mentioned earlier, showing off its heat blued screws and well-finished rotor through the sapphire case back.
Also engraved on the edges of the display case back is the features of the marine automatic watch
The Strap of the STOWA Marine is made of a durable, non-padded black leather 20 mm lug with a creme coloured underside leather having the word “Stowa and since 1927” printed on each side of the leather respectively. Very comfortable on the wrist. On the buckle is a solid 18mm polished steel and the STOWA logo engraving on it.
And in terms of size measuring 40mm, the watch still sits nicely on my almost 8-inch wrist.
All through my testing of this the marine classic automatic, l noticed no major problem wearing, it sits very comfortably on the wrist, with the soft leather strap.
Personally, the Stowa marine classic ticks several boxes. Its versatility to meet the challenge of everyday wear is great. Its overall simplicity while still maintaining a stylish look which is what I personally love in a watch. A beautiful legible dial with a quality decorated movement which is perfection. Therefore, if you’re out for a watch with 90 years history in watchmaking and a great build quality. You can’t go wrong with choosing this masterpiece from Stowa.
